Rooted AI
A directory of public-interest and community-oriented AI tools and accountability frameworks for environmental and climate resilience, food security, cultural sovereignty, and health.
  • This directory catalogues mostly free and/or open source AI applications and accountability frameworks developed largely by academic/research groups, civil society networks, and social impact initiatives. They are specifically designed to improve the livelihoods and resilience of certain peoples or places.
  • The majority of these applications are also classified as traditional AI, meaning they are purpose-built models that do one specific thing within a defined scope.
  • The four accountability frameworks are non-AI tools or guides that allow researchers or organisations to assess the potential safety concerns or hazards involved in deploying LLMs or machine learning tools. It is highly recommended to go through these frameworks first if you are interested in deploying any AI application.
  • Skill level definitions: Basic (smartphone skills or basic computer literacy) · Intermediate (understanding of digital platforms and data analysis) · Advanced (requires programming or ML skill).
